Postdoctoral researcher in the area of endoscopic video enhancement

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The enhancement of endoscopic videos is a critical yet complex task. These videos are integral to various clinical interventions, where the clarity of imaging data is essential for procedural success. Due to challenging imaging conditions, the quality of endoscopic videos can be significantly compromised by a range of artifacts. This project seeks to develop the next generation of enhancement algorithms tailored for endoscopic videos, with a focus on applications in real-time interventions. Development efforts will prioritize both enhancement quality and computational efficiency, particularly with respect to latency.

Project background

The successful candidate will join the BMIC team at ETH Zurich and also be a part of the Computer Vision Lab (CVL). The project is conducted in collaboration with an industrial implementation partner, who will provide support with hardware and software integration.

Job description

The position entails duties in three axes: (1) research, (2) teaching, and (3) supervision.

Research: The researcher is expected to conduct cutting edge research on analysis and enhancement of endoscopic videos. This entails development of new algorithms and methods, and software implementation of these developments. Maintaining an open communication and fostering the collaboration with the project partners. Completing the deliverables of the project.

Teaching: The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to the courses taught by the members of the BMIC group, including Image Analysis and Computer Vision and Medical Image Analysis. Teaching is not a mandatory part of the position but rather an option given to the researcher.

Supervision: The researcher will be expected to contribute to the supervision of semester and master thesis projects, master of science students conduct in the department.

Profile

 The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline,
  • Experience in the analysis of endoscopic video data,
  • Expertise in image and/or video enhancement algorithms,
  • A strong interest in the development of real-time, low-latency algorithms,
  • A minimum of two first-author publications in top-tier venues such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, MICCAI, IPMI, CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, or ICML,
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills in English.
