PhD Position in Ocean Microbial Population Genomics

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The phylogenetic and functional diversity of the ocean microbiome has been shaped by a complex interplay between organisms and their environment over billions of years. Uncovering the extent and structure of this diversity requires an exploration of the molecular adaptations that facilitate survival, growth and diversification, alongside the ecological drivers that underpin them.

We are seeking a qualified and highly motivated PhD candidate who is keen to work on the following questions:

How can we define and measure biodiversity in the global ocean? How is this diversity structured over space and time? What are the molecular adaptations that underpin the diversification of microbial populations? What are the ecological drivers of such adaptations?

Project background

The Microbiome Research Laboratory at ETH Zurich aims to uncover the composition, diversity, and function of microbial communities and the ecological and evolutionary drivers that underpin them. To achieve this, we develop computational tools and genomics resources and combine them with cutting-edge experimental analyses. Our interdisciplinary approaches are facilitated by the diverse expertise among lab members, the surrounding environment and work within international research consortia (e.g.: BioOcean5D) to work collaboratively on groundbreaking research.

Job description

In this project, you will have a large-scale, systematically processed metagenomic dataset from the global oceans at your disposal. You will use cutting-edge computational tools, develop novel concepts and perform analyses to leverage this data and investigate the diversity, adaptation and evolution of microbial populations. If you have a background in ecology/evolution and are keen to work with global-scale data resources, then this could be the perfect position for you.

Your profile

  • A Master's degree that is centred around ecology/evolution/microbiology
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and detail-oriented team player with strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with Bash/Python/R
  • Fluent in English and comfortable with basic IT systems
