PhD position in Hardware Security
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Computer Security Group (https://comsec.ethz.ch) is a research group in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zürich.
We are interested in a variety of hot topics in the area of systems security with a special focus on hardware. The main aim of the group is improving the security of modern computer systems. To do that, we often build novel analysis techniques to uncover previously-unknown attack surfaces and when appropriate we design and implement new systems to protect against various classes of attacks. This means that the group does heavy technical work, from building hardware/software systems to analyzing hardware components. Examples of our research topics include microarchitectural security, DRAM security, operating system security and peripheral security to name a few.
As a new member of the group, you are supposed to contribute to research activities in the group and gradually build your own independent research profile according to your interests. Successful candidates are expected to work towards a doctoral degree, and participate in the teaching activities of the group. The research group aims to increase the number of women in scientific positions. Female candidates are therefore encouraged to apply.
We are looking for someone with a strong hardware design background and a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field to join our top-notch group. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the group members and the microelectronics design center in the department (https://dz.ee.ethz.ch) to build the next generation of secure hardware/software platforms.
Ideally we are looking for a candidate with experience, knowledge and/or strong interest to learn:
- Digital circuit design using HDL/HLS with ASIC/FPGA flows
- Systems building at board level around customized circuits and getting them to work
- Computer architecture design, simulation, and performance evaluation
- RISC-V and ideally one of its open source designs
- Recent hardware-based attacks such as Spectre, Meltdown and Rowhammer
On top of the above, a successful applicant must be able to think critically, have strong communication skills, be goal-oriented and enjoy collaboration.
ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.
We value diversity
Curious? So are we.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents: research statement, CV, names and email addresses of at least two people for reference letters, copies of degree certificates and the associated grades. Please include fresh new ideas that you might have or if you know how to improve one of our existing work in your research statement. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
