CSCS, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, is a unit of ETH Zurich based in Lugano. It provides, develops, and promotes technical and scientific services for the Swiss research community in high-performance computing (HPC). To reinforce our team we are currently seeking a Web Application and Database Developer.

Job description

This vacancy is within the Business Services team which is responsible for the design, developing and maintenance of Web Interfaces, Web Applications and Web Services, as well as maintaining and expanding the related SQL databases (schema, optimization). The team is responsible for the design and implementation of a number of critical applications that support our main business as well as internal processes. Furthermore, it is responsible for the continued development and maintenance of the central business intelligence platform, known as the User Management Portal. This latter task requires the team to actively understand and contribute towards the development of the information capturing processes for a changing business environment that is seeing increasing aspects from the Cloud becoming important to HPC.

The appointment at CSCS is permanent (probation period of three months). The starting date is as soon as possible. You will benefit from a competitive salary based on experience and performance.

Your profile

You have a Bachelor or Master in computer science or equivalent with at least 5 years of professional experience in the development of web applications and web services. You also have 3 years of professional experience in Java development and at least 1 year with Java Spring Framework. You are proficient in object-oriented programming and have a strong expertise in designing and consuming RESTful APIs and Web Services.

You have demonstrated work experience with popular Web Programming languages, frameworks, formats and libraries such as: PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/ES6, React, Node.js, JSON, etc. as well as demonstrated experience in SQL coding including the utilization of advanced SQL features such as procedures, functions, triggers, etc.

Experience with build tools such as Gradle or Maven as well as with the use of distributed Version-Control Systems like Git or equivalent, good knowledge of CI/CD pipeline tools as well as UNIX systems and shell scripting round off your technical profile.

A successful candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in deploying microservices-based architectures, preferably in a public cloud environment. Knowledge of cloud identity and access management technologies such as OAuth and OIDC as well as NoSQL databases is considered a plus.

Quality of code and the design and development of secure, reusable and maintainable applications are crucially important and you continuously integrate these aspects in your daily work.

Besides your motivation to take on new challenges and to work independently within a vibrant and collaborative scientific environment, you are characterized by strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with Agile software development practices. You are a solution-oriented person and you are able to work under pressure in an international environment. The ideal candidate is a team player and feels comfortable working in a leading HPC centre in Lugano, Canton Ticino.

Good command of written and spoken English (official working language) is a must. Knowledge of Italian, German or French is considered an advantage.
