Scientist position in Engineering Seismology

The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at the Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zurich is the federal agency responsible for monitoring earthquakes in Switzerland and its neighbouring countries and for assessing Switzerland’s seismic hazard and risk. The activities of the SED are integrated in the federal program for earthquake risk reduction.

Job description

Your core duties of this research position include:

  • Improving numerical methods for the deterministic, stochastic and hybrid modelling of earthquake strong ground motion by including realistic sources and complex realistic structural models.
  • The development of methods to simulate nonlinear wave phenomena in sedimentary rocks in the near-field, and in soft surface sediments.
  • The assessment of physical limits of ground motion.
  • The development of strategies for the calibration of 3D geological/geophysical models for the numerical simulation of strong ground motion for site specific or regional seismic hazard assessment.

You will be part of an application-oriented team in engineering seismology and contribute to the development of the next-generation seismic hazard models of Switzerland. The position should be filled by May 1, 2022, but an earlier start is possible. The duration of the position will be for 4 years, with the possibility of extension. The position can be filled at a more junior (post-doc) or a research scientist level.

Your profile

You are a highly motivated candidate with:

  • Proven quantitative skills and the ability to take an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • A PhD obtained in the last 5 years in the domains of Seismology, Physics, Geophysics, Engineering Seismology or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in state of the art numerical simulations of strong ground motion and in engineering seismology.
  • Excellent programming skills, experience in HPC and data assimilation techniques, and good communication skills.
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of German or French would be regarded positively.

You are team-oriented and used to work on a project with predefined goals, as well as to contribute to teaching and student supervision.
