Research Lead - Ariya Bio

Ariya Bio (to be incorporated) is an early-stage startup developing gene-editing cell therapies to treat genetic diseases. As part of our collaboration with Prof. Jacob Corn’s Lab of Genome Biology and secured Innosuisse funding, we seek a research lead who may become a Co-Founder. The applicant should have expertise in CRISPR-Cas9 Gene-Editing, Hemoglobin Regulation, and Molecular Biology and should be eager to pursue an ambitious and fast-paced entrepreneurial venture.
The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the scientific goals and progress of the project and closely work with the program lead. The applicant will perform primarily strategic planning and management duties and occasional lab work. Furthermore, the research lead will work together with a small team in a collaborative manner. The projects will initially be pre-clinical in nature, and the applicant’s work will directly impact potential therapies for multiple genetic disorders.
Project background
Ariya Bio is currently a part of ETH Zürich with plans to spin out after adequate milestone completion. We are located in the ETH Innovation & Entrepreneurship Lab in Schlieren. Our overarching goal is to develop safe and effective gene-editing cell therapies to treat genetic disorders. With our lead programs in Beta-Hemoglobinopathies, our current focus is on inherited blood disorders; however, we aim to diversify beyond those. We work in a fast-moving field, ensuring a thrilling environment.
Job description
The research lead position is initially until September 2024 and can be extended based on progress and evaluation of performance and securement of further funding by the startup and, at that point, may transition into a Co-Founder role.
Job description
- Definition and alignment of research strategy with the project lead
- Managing the scientific milestones and research progress for the team
- Managing (1-3) researchers
- Provide guidance to the team on:
- Mammalian cell culture (cell lines and primary cells)
- Cell editing and editing analysis
- Molecular biology, such as PCR, qPCR, ChIP, NGS library preparation
- Preparation and validation of diverse CRISPR/Cas reagents
- Assistance with general lab duties (e.g. organisation tasks)
Your profile
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in CRISPR-Cas gene-editing tools, and excellent understanding of gene regulation. This candidate must be very well organised and able to work efficiently and with precision in a fast-paced environment. The applicant must identify with our values as a young start-up striving to make an impact on patient's lives and show remarkable commitment. They must be proactive and can work independently but also as part of a small group. They are capable of using computer software to manage, analyse, and share information. Advanced knowledge of English is essential, as this is the working language of the team.
Required skills:
- PhD in Molecular Biology or similar discipline with at least 2 years professional experience in industry or academia.
- Management experience (managing either Masters students, PhD students, or research technicians)
- Expertise in CRISPR-Cas gene-editing tools
- Expertise with standard molecular biology techniques and mammalian cell culture experience
