Mass Spectrometry Specialist

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

Research and teaching in the Institute of Biochemistry at ETH Zurich, with 9 professorships and about 120 employees, focuses on fundamental processes in the areas of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology.  We invite applications for a Mass Spectrometry (MS) Specialist to provide state-of-the-art proteomic support to the research groups at IBC. Initially, this is a time-limited contract with the potential for conversion into a permanent position. The starting date is upon agreement.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to design and perform quantitative MS analyses of complex protein samples in collaboration with IBC scientists. The ideal candidate should be highly independent, detail-oriented, computer literate, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Prior experience with quantitative MS analyses of proteins and posttranslational modifications, targeted proteomic and data-independent MS workflows as well as data analysis tools thereof would be a plus. Specifically, you will:

  • design and implement suitable MS analytical strategies for in-house proteomic projects
  • operate and maintain LC-MS systems (e.g. Thermo Orbitrap Exploris)
  • give advice on and perform sample preparation
  • measure samples using the most appropriate LC-MS/MS acquisition method
  • analyze and interpret MS data
  • report results to the internal collaborators
  • keep up-to-date with technological advances in mass spectrometry and data analysis

Your profile

  • you should hold a PhD in Natural Sciences, preferably in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or Systems Biology
  • you have broad experience in quantitative proteomics, data analysis and project management, preferably at the postdoctoral level, and have a strong interest in cellular biochemistry
  • in addition to a solid research record, you should have enthusiasm for multidisciplinary teamwork, good communication skills, and you should be service oriented
  • English skills are a prerequisite
