Head of OPM Laboratory

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

This position is based at the Translational Neuromodeling Unit (TNU), a division of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a joint institution by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. The TNU develops new methods and computational assays for individualised prognosis and treatment prediction in computational psychiatry/psychosomatics.

Project background

Together with partners from the Departments of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) and Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST) at ETH as well as the University of Zurich, the TNU is establishing a new laboratory for Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPM) for non-invasive measurements of human physiology in health and disease. A particular focus is on developing new methods for measuring brain activity in human patients, under patient-friendly conditions (e.g. free movements, VR) that limit or exclude the use of existing neuroimaging technologies.

The employment is initially on a fixed-term contract; a switch to a permanent position can be considered at a later point in time.

Job description

The main responsibilities of this position include:

  • setting up the new OPM laboratory
  • establishing and optimising measurement setups
  • maintaining and operating the laboratory on a daily basis
  • conducting research projects with healthy volunteers and patients
  • collaborating with other users of the laboratory in research projects
  • optional: opportunity to contribute to the supervision of PhD and MSc students

Your profile

Mandatory qualifications and characteristics include:

  • PhD in physics or engineering
  • profound knowledge of physics and technology relevant to the deployment of OPM, including magnetic fields, magnetometry, basic electronics, signal handling and processing
  • interest in neuroscience
  • willingness to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment and interact with different research teams
  • willingness to spend time abroad at international laboratories for educational and collaborative purposes
  • collaborative spirit and team player attitude
  • good command of English language

Desirable (but not mandatory) qualifications include:

  • previous experience with EEG, MEG or OPM measurements of brain activity
  • knowledge of German
