Scientist position in Engineering Seismology

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at the Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zurich is the federal agency responsible for monitoring earthquakes in Switzerland and its neighboring countries and for assessing Switzerland’s seismic hazard and risks. The activities of the SED are integrated in the federal program for earthquake risk reduction.

Job description

Your core duties of this research position include:

  • Improving ground-motion attenuation models, ground-motion duration models, and earthquake scaling for Switzerland
  • Improve the seismic source description and site response models
  • Develop scaling relations for earthquake ground motions from small to large magnitudes
  • Development of a new stochastic model for Switzerland inferred in a Bayesian framework incorporating input uncertainties
  • Continue work on ground motion at depth with various applications

You will be part of an application-oriented team in engineering seismology and contribute to the development of the next-generation seismic hazard models of Switzerland.

Your profile

You are a highly motivated candidate with:

  • Proven quantitative skills and the ability to take an interdisciplinary perspective
  • A PhD obtained in the last 5 years in the domains of Seismology, Physics, Geophysics, Engineering Seismology, or a related Engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in state-of-the-art modelling of strong ground motion, signal processing, and in engineering seismology
  • Excellent programming skills, experience in Bayesian techniques, and good communication skills
